Nusantara Part II: Sumba – A Land of Mystery and Magic
with David Metcalf
Join adventurer, explorer, and photographer Dave Metcalf as he takes us on a visual journey to the island of Sumba.
Dave traveled through this beautiful island from West to East in April this year, and after three visits has become enthralled with its people, and their ancient culture:
Sumba is a land of rituals, megalithic gravesites, peaked houses, intricate Ikat weaving and some very beautiful beaches and landscapes. The old ways remain alive on Sumba, as this particular island missed most of the colonization that impacted other parts of Nusantara.
A fascinating place to travel, Sumba is mostly undiscovered and unheard of by many travelers, and receives very few visitors Yet it is only a one-hour plane ride from Bali.
Dave has attended the Pasola ritual on three occasions and will talk about this yearly ritual when rival clans fight each other on horseback. He will present some of his spectacular photos as he shares the stories about what he has witnessed.
Dave will also talk about some social organizations that are working with the local communities in a spirit of togetherness, and trying to help them preserve their culture and prepare for the inevitable changes that are coming.
In keeping with the social distancing protocols set by the Indonesian government, we are limiting the number of participants for our sessions in our forum.
