The High Art of Balinese Wood Carving
‘Everyone is an artist. Everyone is creative in their own way and that creativity is a great thing’ – Rainn Wilson
Join us for a talk and conversation with one of Bali’s creative artists: Nyoman Darmawan.
Nyoman is the son of Pak Made Ada, a third- generation master carver and one of the greatest Balinese living artists, best known for his ornate wooden Garuda statues and meter-high sculptures.
In his talk at Usada Bali, Nyoman will share a personal perspective about the history of woodcarving in his village Pakudui, north of Ubud. He will also speak about patterns in woodcarving, how he learned to be a woodcarver and how it feels to be Pak Made Ada’s son. A question and answer session will follow Nyoman’s storytelling.
Nyoman Darmawan is often addressed by his nick-name Gamang King, he is the 4th generation of a lineage of master woodcarvers. King’s other passions include blending photography and art in a creative process that results in surreal and intimate images of life in Bali.
