RING OF FIRE. An Indonesian Odyssey

Join us this coming Wednesday at Usada Forum for the viewing of documentary film The Ring of Fire filmed and produced by long-term Bali residents Lorne and Lawrence Blair. The film is followed by open discussion.

Description Text:

‘In another age the Blair brothers might have been Marco Polo, Christopher Columbus, Thor Heyerdahl, Lewis and Clark, Stanley and Livingstone… Hypnotically into four one-hour documentaries that are part eye-popping travelogue, part living record of people and places untouched technological development, and part incomparable adventure teeming with thrills, chills, mystery and the bizarre…

The integration of these two white, English brothers into some of the most foreign societies imaginable does, after awhile, begin to resonate with the possibilities afforded to humankind when individuals are willing to risk opening their minds to the unfathomable.’ – Steve Weinstein, Los Angeles Times

Dr. Lawrence Blair is an explorer, filmmaker, author and public speaker on the peoples and creatures of Indonesia. A resident of Bali he has assisted and led marine expeditions throughout the archipelago since the Lindblad Explorer – the first genuinely exploratory tourist ship – broached the Spice Islands in l978. Educated in Britain, France and Mexico, Lawrence Blair earned his doctorate at Lancaster University, England, with a thesis, which explored and defined the field of Psycho-Anthropology. He is also the writer, presenter and co-producer (with his late brother Lorne) of the PBS and BBC TV adventure series Ring of Fire, winner of two EMMY awards, aired in over sixty nations, and introduced by Richard Gere.

Lorne Blair (September 1945 – August 1995) was an English film director and producer. Blair was the director and producer, with his brother Lawrence, of the internationally acclaimed TV series Ring of Fire: An Indonesian Odyssey. Lorne Blair grew up with his family in England, France and Mexico. After university in Mexico, Blair returned to England with his brother and worked as a production assistant at the BBC in London.
