Where Balinese Heritage Lives Through Fire, Family and Food

Cucu celebrates the richness of authentic Balinese cooking through recipes preserved across generations. Prepared over wood fire using time-honoured techniques, each dish reflects a tradition where food has always been more than nourishment. It is an expression of family, culture and wellbeing.

From the slow-cooked richness of Betutu to everyday Balinese favourites, Cucu invites guests to experience the diversity of Bali’s living culinary heritage. Here, ancestral recipes, local ingredients and the warmth of Balinese hospitality come together around the shared table.

About Cucu

The story of Cucu Betutu begins with two generations of cooks united by a love of Balinese food. I Gusti Nyoman Darta, affectionately known as Pak Darta, learned his craft in the kitchens of Ubud Palace, where culinary knowledge was passed from one generation to the next through observation, practice, and devotion. Over decades, he became one of Bali’s respected guardians of traditional cuisine, preserving the distinctive culinary heritage of Gianyar and Ubud. His son, Agus, inherited that passion and now combines the wisdom passed down from his father with his own creativity, bringing a fresh perspective to traditional Balinese cuisine.

For generations, many of these dishes were prepared for temple ceremonies, family celebrations, and community gatherings, where food expressed hospitality, ritual, and togetherness. At Cucu Betutu, this rich culinary tradition is shared beyond the ceremonial table, giving guests the opportunity to experience authentic Balinese cuisine that was once reserved for special occasions.

While Bali is home to many distinctive regional cuisines, Cucu Betutu is dedicated to the flavors and traditions of Gianyar and Ubud. In a town celebrated for its international dining scene, the restaurant offers something deeply local: a cuisine rooted in place, elevated with care, and thoughtfully reimagined for today while remaining true to the traditions that inspire it.
